Novi, MI Hotel Pitches In at the 2008 JCC Maccabi Games
The Doubletree Hotel Detroit/Novi CARE Committee lends a helping hand an Olympics-style games competition for Jewish teenagers from around the globe.
/Michigan News Articles/ - DETROIT, MI, August 27, 2008 - The official CARE Committee of Doubletree Hotel Detroit/Novi, one of the top Detroit area hotels, gave it their all this past week at the Detroit stop of the 2008 JCC Maccabi Games. While the group comprised of hotel management and staff did not compete, of course, they were delighted to provide general volunteer assistance throughout the event.
The JCC Maccabi Games were founded in 1982 and today are co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Association of North America, Maccabi World Union, Maccabi Canada, and Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel. A series of athletic games exclusively for Jewish teenagers ages 13-16, the Maccabi Games have grown from a single community competition of only 300 athletes to an Olympics-style event drawing nearly 6,000 Jewish athletes from all over the globe including Canada, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, Venezuela and of course the United States.
The eager athletes come to compete in any of fourteen sporting events, with disciplines as diverse as baseball, bowling, table tennis, and golf. However, the spirited competition exists purely to facilitate a higher goal. The Games promote teamwork, community involvement, diversity and understanding, as well as pride in being Jewish. It is said that at the JCC Maccabi Games, the truest prize is one that everyone wins - memories that last a lifetime.
Since the inception of the Maccabi Games, over 100,000 Jewish teenagers have competed and benefited from the revered event, and today the energy and excitement that surrounds the games matches if not surpasses that of any other games-style competition in the country.
As part of the JCC's commitment to expanding the Jewish community, Games events were held throughout the Detroit metro area, including the suburbs of Birmingham and West Bloomfield. This marks the fourth time the JCC delegation of Detroit has hosted the games, and the CARE Committee of Doubletree Hotel Detroit/Novi is already looking forward to the next JCC Maccabi Games in Detroit.
